Average customer review:Product Description
A deliciously healthy cooking oil. Better than butter. USDA organic. Unrefined & no trans fats. Rich in lauric acid. A soothing body oil. The coconut oil myth. Coconut oil has been mistakenly described as not healthy. The fact is, coconut oil is cholesterol-free and rich in medium-chain good fats that doctors recommend. Why is it that baby formulas often include coconut oil? Because coconut is one of the world's most nourishing super foods. Nutritionists suggest enjoying up to 3 tbsp of extra-virgin coconut oil each day, so help yourself to this heavenly, creamy taste of the tropics. Nutiva's cold-pressed Coconut Oil is: Extra-virgin & pure white: not refined, deodorized or bleached! Organic: so it's free from pesticides, GMOs and hexane. Versatile: Ideal as high-heat cooking oil (up to 350 degrees), as a nutritious substitute in baking, a better-than-butter replacement on bread, vegetables or popcorn, and as a luscious oil for skin care, hair care, and massage. America needs an oil change. While doctors suggest we consume a 4:1 ratio of Omega-6 to Omega-3, the average American diet provides a ratio of 20:1 or more - contributing to heart disease, skin disorders, and arterial inflammation. So avoid out of balance soy, corn, and canola oils with their trans fats, oxidation, and GMOs. Cook with coconut oil (with only 1% Omega-6), and use olive oil (also low in Omega-6), and hemp oil (with the perfect 3:1 Omega ratio) for unheated recipes. Nature's ideal all-purpose cooking oil. No trans or hydrogenated fat; no cholesterol or hexane. Unlike other brands, we press our coconuts within 2 hours of chopping. No refrigeration required. Solid at room temperature and melts at 76 degrees. Any coconut husk fibers at the bottom of the jar are indigenous to the processing and harmless. Coconut oil contains medium-chain good fats with 50-55% lauric acid - a healthful nutrient that supports the metabolism. Certified organic by QAI. Product of the Philippines.

About the Brand
Nutiva began in 1999 as an idea in the mind of John W. Roulac, the author of four books on home composting and industrial hemp. Nutiva is the third successful business John has founded since jump-starting the modern home-composting movement in the early 1990s with his best-selling book, Backyard Composting. That book has sold more than a million copies worldwide.

A Nutritional Powerhouse
Hempseed is considered by leading researchers and medical doctors to be one of the most nutritious food sources on the planet. Shelled hempseed is packed with 33% pure digestible protein and is rich in iron and vitamin E as well as omega-3 and GLA. A recent report funded by the Canadian government states that hemp protein comprises 66% high-quality edistin protein, and that hempseed contains the highest percentage of this of any plant source. Unlike soy, hemp is not genetically modified, and it doesn't contain the anti-nutritional qualities commonly found in soy.
Got Your EFAs today?
Because the human body produces no Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs), it is important that EFAs be consumed on a regular basis. It is estimated that more than 90% of Americans take in too little of one of the most important EFAs--omega-3--which is found in flax, walnuts, deep-water fish, and hempseeds. EFAs are the "good fats" that doctors recommend as part of a healthy, balanced diet. The quality of omega-3 is vital, and can be diminished by oxygen, heat, and light. Thus consume the freshest seeds possible and store them in a dark, cold environment such as a refrigerator. Nutiva obtains its seeds exclusively from Canada, and we date all our products. Great nutrition never tasted so good.

Delicious
I've tried two of the major coconut oil brands that I order via the internet. I've been using the oil in food and on my skin for about 5 years. I ordered this just to see how it tasted because the price was so good, if it didn't taste right, I'd just use it on my skin. It is the BEST tasting oil I've tried. Tropical Traditions, Coconut Oil Supreme pale in comparison. This is truly a coconut oil you could eat right out of the jar. If you want to try a coconut oil that tastes as good as it smells, this is it. And the price is fabulous. Yea, Nutiva and Amazon!
Tropical Treat
I love this coconut oil! It has a delicate coconut aroma and flavor. I have only just started using it but have found it to be delicious when making pancakes in lieu of using butter. I have also used it as a substitute for butter when making grilled cheese sandwiches and baked sweet potatoes. It will do wonders for your hair and skin too. I especially like using it as a hot oil treatment for my hair. I mix the coconut oil with a few drops of lemon essential oil and rub it into my hair. It smells like dessert and good for my hair and scalp. Try it with your favorite essential oils!
Warning: It melts at 76F. Be careful when opening a jar that's been sitting in a warm cupboard.
This coconut oil has a "toasty" smell.
Before I tried Nutiva coconut oil, I purchased a jar of "Jungle Products" raw extra virgin coconut oil. It was my first time using this oil so I didn't know what to expect. The girl at the store recommended it, she said the oil from Jungle Products was much better than the one from Spectrum (the other brand they happened to carry). Anyway, this oil had a very clean coconut aroma, which I liked a lot but it was a bit pricey so, a few weeks later, I decided to order Nutiva coconut oil, based on the many positive reviews and also to save money. I bought a 54 oz jar.
When the oil arrived (on time and nicely packaged, btw) I didn't quite know what to think because it didn't smell like the Jungle Products oil. The Nutiva oil has a sort of "toasty" smell. It's not very strong but it took some getting used to (actually, I never quite did, as I'd find it rather off putting at times). So I spent a few hours online trying to find out why this oil smelled like that. Well, I wound up landing on a "raw food talk" forum where people were discussing the fact that Nutiva coconut oil is not raw and that the company has finally come out and stated that they have been changing their manufacturing processes and that they will soon produce raw coconut oil (which was supposed to hit the market by September 2009, however their website doesn't seem to address this).
I know that heat does not affect coconut oil (and I doubt Nutiva uses very high heat to process the oil) so I'm not worried about that but the way they manufacture the oil may be what produces that particular smell which I don't really like.
Anyway, a few weeks ago I ordered coconut oil from Tropical Traditions, which smells lightly of fresh coconut.
If Nutiva raw coconut oil ever becomes available, I will give it a try and report right back.
However, I've just learned that (quoting from the Tropical Traditions FAQ page): "Any coconut oil distributed anywhere in North America has 'seen heat.' Shipping containers used to ship the coconut oil to the US by sea from the tropics can reach temperatures of over 130 degrees F. If you have a truck deliver coconut oil to your home in the summer time by any of the major carriers, temperatures inside that truck will reach up to 125 degrees F. In the winter time coconut oil turns solid and MUST be heated in order to be repackaged into retail size containers from drums. Tropical Traditions uses large insulated containers that hold many drums and keep a steady temperature of between 90 to 100 degrees F. in the winter time to keep our stored oil liquid so it can be repackaged. It does take longer to liquefy 55 gallon drums this way (a few days) in the winter, but it more closely resembles ambiance air temperatures in the tropics. Many other repackagers use electric drum bands to melt the coconut oil more quickly, and temperatures inside the drum become much hotter, closer to boiling temperatures. So any coconut oil you buy will have 'seen heat.' But the good news is that coconuts are designed by our Maker to grow and thrive in hot climates, and the oil is not harmed in any way by these low-level heats."
So, in closing, go ahead and give Nutiva coconut oil a try. If you've never used virgin coconut oil before, chances are you won't even notice that toasty smell. If you do, well, then you may want to try either of the two other brands I've mentioned in this review.
