Simmons Kids Beautyrest Beginnings 2-Sided Vinyl Contour PadSimmons Kids Beautyrest Beginnings 2-Sided Vinyl Contour Pad
Buy new: $29.99 / Used from: $27.59
Whether you have an actual changing table or not, you need somewhere to change diapers & dress/undress baby that is at a comfortable height. Trying to do these things in the crib kills my back & once you have to drop the mattress, will be impossible. These will sit on a table, countertop, or dresser if you don’t have an actual changing table.
Ultra Plush Changing Pad Covers - Sage - Pack of 2Ultra Plush Changing Pad Covers - Sage - Pack of 2
If you have a changing pad, you need a cover. I like the ones called plush - very soft. I thought the terry cloth (towel material) ones would be a good idea, but the one I have is rough.
Carters Keep Me Dry Flannel Lap Pads, Ecru, 3 PackCarters Keep Me Dry Flannel Lap Pads, Ecru, 3 Pack
Buy new: $6.99
Thank goodness I received these as part of a diaper cake at my baby shower! Otherwise, I may have never discovered them because they aren't sold in many stores. I use these every time I change Harper's diaper. These pads have saved countless couches, carpets, comforters, and changing table covers.
Kids Line Willow Organic Diaper StackerKids Line Willow Organic Diaper Stacker
Buy new: $19.99
Initially, I thought these things were stupid and that I would never use it. I ended up buying one when we got to size 2 diapers & Harper & the stack of diapers no longer fit on the changing table together, so now the diapers are hanging on the side of table and it works great. I like the ones that attach with a hook instead of the ties - much easier to move around if you decide you need one.
Carter's Sleeplikely GownsCarter's Sleeplikely Gowns
I take these to the hospital. Look for the kind that have an elastic bottom and sleeves that fold over the hands like a mitten. So convenient for frequent newborn diaper changes.
Baby's Own 4 Piece All In One, Hat, Mitten & Bib Set, Light Blue, NewbornBaby's Own 4 Piece All In One, Hat, Mitten & Bib Set, Light Blue, Newborn
Onesies (yes), hats (yes), socks (yes) bibs (yes), mittens (maybe). I was putting socks over Harper's hands to keep her from scratching herself, but Seth didn't like that & went out & bought mittens while we were still in the hospital. I guess one pair wouldn't hurt.
Kiddopotamus SwaddleMe Microfleece, Small, SageKiddopotamus SwaddleMe Microfleece, Small, Sage
Buy new: $9.95
These things are lifesavers IF your baby likes to be swaddled. You won't need it at the hospital because the blankets they use are made for swaddling and the nurses are pros. But if swaddling comforts your baby, you'll want at least one of these at home.
HALO Sleepsack Wearable Blanket Deluxe Velboa, Pale Pink, SmallHALO Sleepsack Wearable Blanket Deluxe Velboa, Pale Pink, Small
Buy new: $21.99
Yes, yes, yes. Once baby is ready to stretch out (no longer wanting to be swaddled) the sleepsack is a must. With the worry of SIDS, you don't want a traditional blanket anywhere near your baby while it's sleeping. Harper slept in one of these until she was almost a year. You can get them with or without sleeves, in light or heavy weight.

Fisher-Price Rainforest BouncerFisher-Price Rainforest Bouncer
Buy new: $42.00
We used the bouncer a lot. It's light and small, so it's easy to move to wherever you need it. One of the only places you can "sit" an infant when you need to go to the bathroom, take a shower, or whatever. I also used it at bath time. I laid the towel out on it and was able to move Harper from the tub to the towel to dry wrap her up without all the fumbling.
Fisher-Price Precious Planet Open Top Take-Along SwingFisher-Price Precious Planet Open Top Take-Along Swing
Whether you want a portable swing or larger, more stationary swing with more options is your choice, but most babies love to swing. I liked the take along because we needed things we could travel with.
Fisher-Price Aquarium BathtubFisher-Price Aquarium Bathtub
Buy new: $29.99 / Used from: $27.59
I liked this tub. A lot of people like the sponges better, but whatever - you can decide. The hammock was great when Harper was first born, then you can detach the bottom & let the baby actually sit in the water, but still use the head pillow for support. Once they can hold their head up, take the hammock out completely. This tub lasted us from birth to probably 6 or 8 months.
Graco Quattro Tour Deluxe Travel System with Snugride32, TownsendGraco Quattro Tour Deluxe Travel System with Snugride32, Townsend
A travel system worked out well for us. I chose a Graco with Snugride because of the safety ratings of the infant seat, the quick snap car base and the infant seat was well secured when inserted into the stroller. Look for a stroller that is easy to fold and unfold, has deep cup holders, a large basket and a smooth ride.

Just trust me on this one.
Munchkin See Baby Backseat MirrorMunchkin See Baby Backseat Mirror
I made Seth stop at Walmart on the way home from the hospital to buy one of these. You have to be able to see baby while driving and a mirror is the only way to see a rear-facing baby from the front seat. In my opinion, these things should come as standard equipment with the car seat.
JJ Cole Original Infant Bundle Me, GraphiteJJ Cole Original Infant Bundle Me, Graphite
Buy new: $44.95
I love these and have the lightweight and heavy, quilted version, but it's also an optional item. You can cover baby with blanket, but these things won't blow off, fall off, or get kicked off. You can zip the front completely off if it's too warm or if you need something to lay the baby on for a diaper change on a public changing station.
MAM 2 Pack Pearl Silicone Pacifier and Pacifier Clip, 2 Months, Colors May VaryMAM 2 Pack Pearl Silicone Pacifier and Pacifier Clip, 2 Months, Colors May Vary
Buy new: $9.79
I bought different types of pacifiers for calculated reasons - shape, lactation consultant recommendation, etc. Of course she only liked the one we got at the hospital - this one. I'll leave you to plan your own strategy. Once you figure out which one works, get a clip. It will keep the pacifier from hitting the floor & keep you from having to search for it in every crack of the car seat & couch.
Playtex Drop-Ins Original BPA Free Nurser Newborn Starter SetPlaytex Drop-Ins Original BPA Free Nurser Newborn Starter Set
Buy new: $15.74
No matter what, eventually you're going to need some kind of bottle. I liked these because they are BPA free and have the disposable liner (which is recyclable). There is nothing to wash except the nipples. When it comes to nipples, I like silicone - they don't get yucky and discolored or wear out as quickly as the latex.
Munchkin Bottle and Nipple Brush, Colors May VaryMunchkin Bottle and Nipple Brush, Colors May Vary
Buy new: $3.29
You will never run the dishwasher enough to keep up with the baby stuff. Make sure you buy one that includes a nipple brush.
Munchkin Powdered Formula Dispenser Combo Pack, Colors May VaryMunchkin Powdered Formula Dispenser Combo Pack, Colors May Vary
Buy new: $4.62
Whoever invented this is a genius. Just fill your bottles with the appropriate amount of water and portion the formula in the dispenser and mix when you’re ready. Great for travelling and for sending to the babysitter...you don't have to keep anything cold, worry about someone else mixing the formula properly, and nothing is wasted because you don't mix it until you're ready to use it.
JJ Cole Mode Diaper Tote Bag, Cocoa TreeJJ Cole Mode Diaper Tote Bag, Cocoa Tree
Buy new: $59.74
The only thing I'll say about diaper bags is that you need one and DO NOT leave the house without at least one complete change of clothes for baby inside.
Pampers Sensitive 3X Wipes 192 Count (Pack of 4)Pampers Sensitive 3X Wipes 192 Count (Pack of 4)
Buy new: $26.25
Wipes are a personal choice. I like these. They are perfect for getting into all the cracks and crevices. In my opinion, Huggies and other brands are too thick and rough. But everyone is different, so maybe you want to try out a few kinds before you decide to buy 800 wipes.
Pampers Swaddlers New Baby Newborn Diapers, 84 CountPampers Swaddlers New Baby Newborn Diapers, 84 Count
Buy new: $28.49
Again, diapers are one of those things you just have to try out to know. I like Pampers - they seem to keep things "in" the diaper better than others. However, I know several people, especially parents of boys, who prefer Huggies. I also know people who think that generic diapers work just as well as the name brand.
Playtex Diaper Genie Elite Diaper Disposal PailPlaytex Diaper Genie Elite Diaper Disposal Pail
Buy new: $34.39
If you're diligent enough to take the trash out every day, you don't need a diaper pail. But if the diapers are gong to sit in the house for a few days, you're going to need something to control the smell. We have tried a few different pails and Diaper Genie definitely seems to do the best job.
Evenflo Snugli Comfort Vent Carrier, NavyEvenflo Snugli Comfort Vent Carrier, Navy
I used this a few times with Harper – definitely could have lived without it, but it was handy for crowded places you don't want to take the stroller, shopping, or housework when she wouldn't let me put her down. I expect to use it a lot more this time around in order to attend to Harper. There are slings & other products that do the same thing you could check out if it interests you.
Graco Pack 'N Play Playard with Bassinet, KenslyGraco Pack 'N Play Playard with Bassinet, Kensly
Buy new: $76.38
Another controversial item-great for hotels & friend/relatives homes not equipped for baby. Some use instead of traditional bassinet/cradle or as a 2nd crib in multi-level homes. We take it to cookouts for diapers/naps/containment, use it outdoors at home & have left it at the sitter’s so Harper had her own bed. Versatile & useful, depending on your lifestyle. Get a sheet. I like the quilted kind.
Graco Ultra Clear 49MHZ Baby MonitorGraco Ultra Clear 49MHZ Baby Monitor
I can't remember when I bought a monitor, but it wasn't until after Harper was born. I used it for naps while she was sleeping in our room at night & when she first moved to her crib. We don't use it at all anymore. If we had a multi-story house, I would probably still be using it & maybe have even splurged for a video model, but instead I paid $16 for a basic monitor & that's all we ever needed.

Safety 1st Complete Grooming KitSafety 1st Complete Grooming Kit
Comb, brush, nail clippers, and nail scissors - all necessities. Harper got a toothbrush at 15 months. I have never had use for the baby emery boards. Take the nail clippers/scissors to the hospital in case you need them. Harper came out with claws and hospitals do not cut nails. I preferred the scissors when she was really small & she tolerates them much better than the clippers.

The only thing I've every used from our kit is the thermometer and the nasal aspirator. You will want to have these two items on hand at all times.
Dreft Laundry Detergent - 170 oz -110 load size-NEW BIGGER SIZEDreft Laundry Detergent - 170 oz -110 load size-NEW BIGGER SIZE
Buy new: $54.18
I have friends that wash their baby's things in the same detergent they use on their clothes with no problems. Since I have sensitivity to certain dyes & material, I decided not to chance it and use Dreft for Harper's things. There are several baby detergents out there - you'll have to decide which way you want to go. Either way, I suggest washing everything for Little Dude before he gets here.
What to Expect the First Year, Second EditionWhat to Expect the First Year, Second Edition by Heidi Murkoff
Buy new: $17.43 / Used from: $4.85
I used this book everyday for the first few weeks, and referenced it several times to age 1. The two things I remember being the most helpful are how to deal with cradle cap and the appropriate way to apply diaper rash cream.
My Life as A Baby: A First Year Calendar (Organizer)My Life as A Baby: A First Year Calendar (Organizer) by Peter Pauper Press
Buy new: $11.69 / Used from: $8.83
If I hadn't had a first year calender, I may not have written anything down except heights & weights from the doctor visits - so much easier to keep track of milestones and other events than with a traditional babybook. Hang it on the wall in the nursery & there is no excuse for not keeping up.
