![]() | Fisher-Price Precious Planet Whale of a Tub
Buy new: $19.89 This is a definite "Do Not Need." Instead, buy one of those sponges that go in the tub or sink (for around $5 at most retailers). You can bathe the baby easier that way and you can replace it easily if it gets gross from extensive use. Plus, it can be stored quite easily as opposed to the behemoth baby bathtub.
![]() | Graco Quattro Tour Sport Travel System, Boone
Buy new: $224.99 Folks, you don't need a "travel system!" Instead buy a good carseat and get the stroller frame (see below) to go with it. The strollers for the "systems" are bulky, ugly (in my opinion), and are hard to store and tote. By the time the baby outgrows the carseat, they'll be ready for a super-compact umbrella stroller anyway!
![]() | Graco SnugRider Infant Car Seat Stroller Frame
Buy new: $64.32 This is a definite "Do!" Most of the time I tote my son around in the Moby Wrap, but this thing works great too. It collapses and stores easily in the trunk of our compact car. It's relatively easy to unfold and use, and we've not had trouble on any terrain. Pair this with the Graco Snug Ride or Safe Seat and you've only spent around $150--less than a travel system!!
![]() | Fisher-Price Green Meadows Bouncer
"DO!!!" For me, this was the item I used most the first 6 months with a baby! How could I have showered without it? Also handy if your baby has to sleep sitting up (when they have a cold or have reflux issues). Don't spend a fortune, just get a basic one and you'll be set.
![]() | Prince Lionheart Ultimate Wipes Warmer
Buy new: $19.17 You "DO NOT" need a wipes warmer!!! Yes, wipes are cold. They will not hurt your baby (sometimes during a diaper rash episode cold wipes actually feel good). You can't have warm wipes everywhere you go. Also, this is just one more thing to fool with on a daily basis (not to mention the frustration of burned & dried-out wipes).
![]() | Arm's Reach Mini Co-Sleeper Bassinet - Natural
Buy new: $139.95 Any small crib you can use to have baby in the room with you is GREAT! (Also, those little contraptions you put in your bed are great too, although we didn't have the room in our bed.) Sometimes you can get these used on craigslist or the like, so look there for a good deal. Co-sleeping is great! My youngest is 6 months old and still co-sleeps.
![]() | Fisher-Price Rainforest Melodies and Lights Deluxe Gym
Buy new: $52.00 / Used from: $45.51 A baby gym is actually a decent item, but I wouldn't spend more than $30 on one. Whenever I saw them in stores (BRU, Target), I was looking at paying $80! Luckily our Walmart had one for $30. I'm glad I didn't spend more as our little one doesn't use it enough to justify a large price tag.
![]() | Manhattan Toy Soft Activity Book with Tethered Toy, Buzzing Through
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $13.79 Soft books are a "DO!" Even when bright pictures and sweet phrases in regular books capture their attention, the soft books are ones you can "give" your little one and not worry. Everything seems to make it into my little one's mouth, so the soft books are better than board books in that respect.
![]() | Kiddopotamus SwaddleMe Microfleece, Small, Sage
Buy new: $9.95 Not a "don't" but a "wait". We discovered in the hospital that our little one HATED being swaddled. If we had purchased these, we would have either had to return them or try to resell them. If you get one as a gift, keep the receipt and don't wash it until you see if you'll actually use it.
![]() | Medela Pump in Style Advanced Breast Pump with Shoulder Bag
Buy new: $349.99 A good pump is essential if you intend to do so for a long period of time, but WAIT to purchase one until you know for sure you'll use it. Rent a hospital pump to try out while you're getting the hang of breast feeding...then if you still want to pump extensively, make the purchase (and this pump is the best). You can't return these things!
![]() | Philips Avent Express Microwave Sterilizer
Buy new: $34.90 This is a definite "do not need." We only sterilize initially afer purchase, then wash in hot soapy water each time thereafter. Our kids are rarely sick, and our little one is in daycare! Kids who have everything sterilized don't ever get a chance to build up immunity to any germs, making them vulnerable when they get into the "real world." Waste of money.
![]() | Playtex Diaper Genie Elite Diaper Disposal Pail
Buy new: $34.39 "DON'T." I have 4 words for you: "take out your trash." Even with stinky, teething-diarrhea diapers, taking out the trash (at least emptying baby's trash) each day will remedy any stink issues you may have. Spend your money ONCE on a trash can with a lid on it--don't buy something you have to maintain with "refills" and the like.
![]() | My Brest Friend Pillow, Sunburst
Buy new: $34.88 / Used from: $24.01 "DO!!" I was not able to breast feed our little one for very long due to complications while giving birth, but if I didn't have this thing, I wouldn't have done it at all. I cannot say enough good things about this! Back support, proper baby positioning, good fit all around, etc. Even if you don't breast feed very long, you can resell this and recoup most of your money. It's worth it!
![]() | Bugs On Board
Buy new: $19.99 "DO!" Doesn't necessarily have to be these, but I can't stress enough the importance of some decent car seat toys. If you spend any time in the car with your little one, these create a nice distraction for them if they end up hating to ride in the seat. You don't have to spend a lot, but rotate in new toys every couple of months and you'll have a happy traveler.javascript:saveCommentAction();
![]() | Fisher-Price Rainforest Baby View Auto Mirror
Buy new: $21.49 "DO!" Like before, not necessarily this one, but get one. You'll appreciate the peace of mind being able to see if your baby has spit up all over himself, if he's asleep, etc. You don't have to spend a lot, but I would advise buying one.
![]() | Bright Starts Lots of Links
Buy new: $4.99 "DO!" These are great! I use them to clip toys to things I wouldn't otherwise be able to. Our little one also likes just a few linked together as a toy by itself--makes a great teether! Easily washable and very durable. Good investment.
![]() | Evenflo Farmyard Mega ExerSaucer
This is a "DON'T" in my book. Buy a walker instead. If you're going to spend the money, buy something they'll use for many months rather than just a couple. My little one has been using his walker since 4 months, and I anticipate he'll use it until he walks. Don't believe the hype about a walker stifling walking skills--older son had one and was walking at a year.
![]() | Munchkin 6 Pack Soft-Tip Infant Spoon, Colors May Vary
Buy new: $4.99 "DO!" These spoons are WAY better than the Gerber spoons. The shape of the "bowl" of the spoon is so much easier for baby to take, and they are easier to handle when you have a novice eater!
![]() | Simply Saline Sterile Saline Nasal Mist, Baby 1.5 fl oz (44 ml)
Buy new: $5.95 "DO!" The great applicator/sprayer is the reason I chose this particular one. Super quick and easy--you can spray in both nostrils before your little one has time get too upset. Pair this with the Nosefrida and you've got a great snot sucking system!
![]() | Nosefrida The Snotsucker Nasal Aspirator
Buy new: $14.54 "DO!!!!!!!" For goodness sake, buy something that will actually get the snot out of the nose! This sounds disgusting (and it took a long time for me to try it), but it WORKS! My youngest still hates anything getting near his nose, but I know it's not hurting him the way a bulb syringe would.
![]() | Vicks 1.0 Gallon Cool Mist Humidifier
Buy new: $29.99 / Used from: $26.99 "Do!" A humidifier is a must! You can get an inexpensive model like this one at Walmart or Target, no need to spend a lot of money. Keeping moisture in the air will help your baby's nasal passages stay moist and help to fight off illness.
![]() | Vicks Baby Rectal Thermometer
Buy new: $13.99 "DO" A good and easy-to-use rectal thermometer is a must with a little one. It's the only way to get an accurate temperature. You'll need to use it until about 4 - 6 months, then you can switch to a good ear thermometer. My baby never minded getting his temp taken rectally, and I attribute that to having a good thermometer.
![]() | Infants' Mylicon Gas Relief Dye Free Drops ~1/2 Fl Oz
Buy new: $26.99 "DO!" Mylicon is great, and better than the other brands (even if they tell you they're all the same). Be sure and get the dye-free kind to avoid unsightly stains. You'll want to have some of this on hand as soon as baby arrives."
![]() | 2-Pack Scratch Mittens
Buy new: $1.99 - $2.99 "DON'T" I never used any that I got. They don't stay on and are very quickly outgrown. Learn how to trim their fingernails early on--you've gotta do it regularly so you might as well bite the bullet. I hated it at first, but it didn't take long to get good at it (especially when baby's napping). And if all else fails, just use baby socks--they'll stay on much better.
![]() | Gerber SNP GERBER GREEN 0-3M 3PC
"DO" I think sleepers are the perfect outfit for a baby 3 months and under! Can't have too many. Beware with Gerber, you have to buy the next size up due to shrinking. Also, try not to buy too much in the "Newborn" size--my little one was too big to wear any newborn stuff even at the hospital.
![]() | SpaSilk 100% Cotton Sleeveless Lap Shoulder 3-Pack Bodysuit - White/Pink, 6 Months
"DO!" I prefer Carter's but they don't sell them here. These are GREAT for layering, esp. when you hit the 9-12 mo. stage where you can only find shirts instead of onesies--these will keep their little bellies warm when that shirt rides up. Sleeveless means it won't be too hot under clothes.
![]() | 12-Pack Washcloths in Blue
"DO" You can't have too many of these--especially if you're cloth diapering and use them as wipes like I do. The package here is about 50 cents per washcloth (currently), so that's cheap enough that you can get quite a few. Runny noses, messy faces, dirty hands, poopy bottoms, soapy bodies--you name it, you can use these super soft washcloths for it. BTW, I found these at our local Baby Depot.
![]() | Canon Digital Rebel XSi 12.2 MP Digital SLR Camera with EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens - Black
Buy new: $629.00 / Used from: $400.00 "DO!" You don't necessarily have to get this particular model, but go ahead and spend the money on a decent camera. It may seem like a lot at first, but you'll want something good to capture those "firsts" that will never happen again! We waited to get ours, and I could kick myself for not having one sooner. You'll use it! Get a good one!
